Chemical Brothers

The Chemical Brothers, Ed Simons and Tom Rowlands, began life as history majors at a college in Manchester England, and began dj-ing as the Dust Brothers at a club called Naked Under Leather. Like others before them, they more or less were forced to change their name in January of this year because another outfit was already using their name in the U.S. Not keen on the idea of calling themselves Dust Brothers UK--like the monikers that the "English" Beat, Charlatans "UK," and "London" Suede were forced to adopt-- they chucked the whole "Dust" thing and rechristened themselves the Chemical Brothers. Probably a wise choice, considering what their U.S brethren, The Dust Bros. did to the early Beastie Boys stuff on Paul's Boutique.

To celebrate the event, the duo named their debut LP Exit Planet Dust which came out on Caroline Records on September 12, a record that Details claims sounds like "Metallica doing Afrika Bambaataa covers." And they're not far from wrong.
